While their exact origins are not known, Fensaers were first discovered in very remote regions of Scotland many years ago. It is believed that they were some species of fairy's steed of choice!

Modern day Fensaers are slightly larger than what might have been found hundreds of years ago - this seems to be in relation to not only their more consistent diet but also due to "survival of the fittest". Common heights range from a minimum of 8hh to a maximum of 12hh. (hh=4", .1=+1") But due to their very small size even today, intervention was required in order to prevent total extinction. They are now often bred in captivity in controlled, specialized breeding programs and then adopted out to create a deeper gene pool. During some experimental breeding where the environmental keys were adjusted slightly, it was found to create some interesting results in the Fenlings (babies), but this information have not yet been released to the public...

Fens are not truly flightless, but they cannot fly as a bird would. They can "glide" and flutter about, in a similar fashion to that of a chicken. (though far more graceful!) With the aid of their wings they can jump quite high when going straight up - near to 15ft in the air!

Fensaers primarily eat grasses, wheats and oats but need to be fed small amounts of nectar in addition in order to fully thrive in captivity. While they can generally digest man-made nectar similar to that of what is provided for hummingbirds, they will always prefer that which is derived from natural sources. This can be given through any nectar producing plant, but Fens often favor honeysuckle, lavender and milkweed. Should nectar be unavailable for one reason or another, it has been found that many Fensaers are able to tolerate eating berries (such as blackberries and mulberries) for a short period of time. This was a common replacement in the earlier years of domestication, though it is not the preferred method.

A balanced diet is key to the health of any Fensaer. They generally eat very little, so it is vital that what they are given includes everything they need for a sustainable life. On average, an adult male Fensaer will eat 0.02% of its body weight in feed and nectar daily. This means that an 80lb Fen (which would be considered on the heavy side) would only need around 0.016lbs of food per day!

It is encouraged to feed your Fensaer small treats, especially when training. Even though their stomachs are small they are highly food motivated especially with sweet things. Tiny pieces of fruits such as apples, pears, peaches and plums are excellent training treats. They can even be dried for ease of storage!

Habitat
In the wild, Fensaers live primarily in meadows where there are plenty of flowers and other forage they would typically eat. In captivity they can adapt to most living conditions - whether they are kept in a barn or stable, enclosed paddock or even left to free roam acreage of any type. (flat, rocky, hills, etc) As long as they are provided with the necessary food they can fend for themselves fairly well, and typically stay nearby their main food source.

Due to their small size, Fensaer make for a perfect pet or companion. They are easy to train and bond easily to humans especially when food is involved!

There are many different ways in which you might be able to adopt a Fen, and they will vary from horse to horse and from artist to artist. While these are by no means the only competitions you will see, these are some of the most common choices:


◇ Naming contest / The artist will choose the form that has the name they think fits the adopt the best! When applying, make sure the name you choose is within any requirements set by the artist.
◇ Personality contest / You will write a personality for the adopt that fits the character you wish to develop! When applying, make sure you remain within any word limit perimeters set by the artist.
◇ Design My Wings / You will provide inspiration for the Fensaer's wing design! When applying, make sure you choose inspiration that fits within any perimeters the artist may have set.
◇ Image or Gif contest / You will choose an image or gif that best fit within the requirements set by the artist!
◇ Eye color contest / You will choose a color for the adopt's eye color, and the artist will pick the form that has the color they feel fits the best! Sometimes, the artist will ask that you not choose a specific color but instead choose a single word or phrase for them to use their imagination and come up with a color that fits that word or phrase! When applying, make sure that your color choice follows any requirements given by the artist.
◇ FCFS or "First Come First Serve" / When an adopt is FCFS, the winner will be determined by whomever is the first to fully and correctly fill out the form given by the artist! If your form is edited before the winner is announced by the artist, it will be disqualified and the Fensaer will go to the next user with a fully and correctly filled out form. When applying, make sure that you stay within any requirements set by the artist, and that you do not edit your form before a winner is announced.



Now that you know some of the different types of contests you might see, here is a look at what an adopt form might actually look like. This is an empty skeleton form, to give you a basic idea of what one might look like when you are applying for a Fensaer adopt.

Unlike their equine ancestors who are fully mammal, Fensaers lay eggs which are fertilized by way of a brightly colored pollen that comes from a unique plant called veilflowers. This pollen combined with the natural oils found in an adult Fen's mane is the perfect recipe for a tiny fenling to be born! Because of this reproductive method, it has been found that Fensaers may breed to any gender and still result in a fenling. Both male and female Fensaers have the ability to create and lay an egg, so long as the pollen has been provided from another Fen!
The egg layer will produce a single egg, which will be laid on the same plant that the pollen is derived from - Once laid it takes 7 days for the egg to hatch. Due to their quick-maturing nature a Fenling reaches adulthood 2 weeks past hatching!
