- The African elephant, the largest land animal that roams the earth. These gentle giants are well known for having tightly-bound family groups, called herds, ruled by a matriarch. Female elephants [cows] travel together, protecting and raising their calves together. The male elephants [bulls] typically travel alone, but may roam in small bachelor groups, however, many fights erupt in these miniature group of males. With the female herds, the population varies from eight to, at the most, a hundred.
Female elephants become old enough to breed at eleven years, and male elephants typically don't start breeding until they're twenty years. Male calves are driven out of their herds between the ages of eight and ten while the females stay in the herd they're born into. The time of breeding all depends on the male, who goes into a state with the heightening of hormones. This event is called musth- when a bull's urge to breed becomes heightened and their aggression towards other males heightens. This occurs annually, typically starting in December and lasting for two months. The gestation period of a female is 22 months, in the end, they give birth to a single calf, twins being EXTREMELY rare. [Note:: If you want your cow to have twins, PM me. When we timeskip to when the cows have their offspring, I will choose one of the applicants who can have twins using a generator.]
Elephants are almost always on the move, spending 18 hours of their day roaming in search for food and can eat up to six hundred pounds in a single day. They eat bark off of trees, the roots of various plants, grasses, and fruits found in the African veldt. The lifespan of a wild African elephant is between fifty to seventy years, that is, if no predators get to them. While they are large, strong creatures, large prides of lions and humans have been known for occasionally taking down adult elephants. Lions and crocodiles are best known to take the lives of small calves, since they're easier prey if their mother is distracted. The mother is extremely protective of her young, willing to impale any creature with her tusk to protect her calf.
