Escape

Postby above_all_else » Fri Apr 27, 2012 8:54 am

This is the story of a girl who's been kidnapped, and her struggle to escape before something terrible happens to her. Enjoy, critique, and above all else, comment.

Prologue

I sat on my bed, looking around my fancy room. A yawn escaped my lips as I turned back to my studying, tucking a stray hair behind my ear. I bit the end of my pencil, my eyes narrowed into hard lines as I studied, scribbling notes once and awhile. A yawn once again split my lips, and anger boiled inside me. “Why do I have to be studying instead of sleeping??” I hissed angrily, chucking the algebra book across the room. I sat there, my arms crossed, brewing for a bit before, reluctantly, collecting the textbook, various notepapers, and pencils that I'd upset in my fit of anger. I placed them carefully on my desk before sitting down on the floor. I stared boredly at the door, and I heard soft footsteps ascending the staircase towards my room. I pretended to be asleep, as it was 11:30, and I wasn't supposed to be up. I heard my door open, and then a low laugh, my father, and footsteps as he approached me, leaning down to pick me up. I tried not to move as he tucked me into bed, kissing my forehead.
“Night, Princess,” he whispered, and I almost cringed. Almost. That was my five year old pet name, long outgrown as I was fifteen now! I heard him flick off the lights and leave the room, his steps receding slowly down the creaky wooden stairs, and only when I heard his shoes clack against the marble of the kitchen tile did I leap out of bed. I grabbed my story, sitting at my desk with the notebook(s) open and my pencil poised to write. Inspiration came to me, and I began working on the next chapter.
Sabrina dashed through the woods, the merry men hot on her trail. “Oh, if I'd only known that spell would send me back in time, I would've thrown away the book like the old lady warned me!” she cried, panting hard as she ran. The men advanced further and further until they finally caught up. The men broke ranks, circling her, keeping the girl trapped. No where to run, no escape, certain death...But she had to try. Calculating the distance to the nearest tree, she launched herself towards one of the men. He gave a cry of alarm as Sabrina's feet hit his chest. She used him as a spring board, and the momentum sent her flying towards the treetops. She reached out a hand, grabbing the nearest branch, only to-

“Izzy, you should have been asleep five hours ago!” my mom cried from the door of my room. “It's midnight! How do you expect to be able to get up for school tomorrow without sleep?” My mom strode into my room, taking my writing from my hand, locking it inside my desk with my laptop, the key to the library, my phone, and my ipod.
“Mom!” I complained, but she was having none of it.
“Isabella Rose! You're lucky I didn't call your father in- go to bed this instant!” my mom snapped, and I climbed dejectedly into bed, closing my eyes as my mother turned out the lights, closing the door softly behind her, leaving me in darkness. I grabbed my safety bag from under the bed- it held all the necessities for if I were to get kidnapped. Two books, an extra phone and iPod, five notebooks and fifteen packs of mechanical pencils. I counted my supplies quickly before wrapping the bag around my arm, satisfied. I drifted off to sleep with Sabrina and the merry men in my mind.

When I woke up, the first thing I noticed was the lack of blanket over my body. I reached out a hand, probing blindly around for it, as my eyes were closed. My hands found something soft and cottony, but it wasn't a blanket. My eyes snapped open, and I realized the cloth was not just any item...it was a mans shirt. I stared at the man in horror, only slightly reassured by the bag around my arm. His face was scraggly with the beginnings of a beard, his greasy brown hair hanging in messy locks around his head. His eyes were a dark blue, the pupils piercingly black. He would have been quite handsome in any other circumstance. I was about to say something when his arms, I guess, disapeared from beneath me, and I plummeted towards the ground. I landed with a hard thud on the dirt ground, and I had no idea where I was.

“What do you think of the stars?” Rose whispered sleepily, her eyes half closed. “I think that they're portals, far away, that lead to other galaxies.”
“Is that a theoretical question?” Derek asked, stroking Rose's hair. “Because if it is, then I'm not sure. But if it's a serious question, then I think that they are balls of fire and gas zillions of miles away.”
“Theoretical,” Rose whispered, yawning. “Serious questions are boring. And too serious.”
“Okay,” Derek smiled. “Then I'm not sure. I suppose-”
“Theoretical questions don't have sure answers,” Rose interrupted. “If you're sure, then you're very, very wrong.”

“Alright,” Derek replied, amused. “I suppose that stars might really be like the eyes of telescopes from different galaxies, or maybe even pinholes. In that situation, we're a controlled biome environment, an experiment of some huge, unfathomable life form... the pinholes, or telescope holes, provide ways to see in. Everything else is a hoax. There are no other planets, there are no other galaxies, all there is is right here, and right now. With you.”

Chapter One

I looked around the tiny shack that had been my home for the last six months. When I first came here, I was terrified and always trying to escape. Now, though, I know it's better to just do what I'm told rather than challenge my kidnapper who goes by the name of Mickey. I'm not the only one here, either. There are at least fifteen girls and five boys. None of us have any visible wounds, and although we're basically good shape, we're all emaciated, and although I can't be sure, I think two of the older girls are pregnant, and I'm the next oldest. I'm terrified! Tonight after Mickey goes to bed, I'm going to call our first ever official meeting of the kids- but for now, I'm going to go do my chores before I get whipped.
I hurried towards the forest, Hazel by my side. She's the newest girl here, and only seven. I've been assigned to teach her the ropes, and then she'll take over for me. Why does she need to take over for me? I'm not sure I want to know. I handed hazel the axe, giving her an encouraging smile.
“Alright, so-”
“What day is it?” Hazel interrupted. I glared at her for a moment, before sighing and giving in.
“It's Wednesday the 15th,” I replied impatiently, “Of July.”
“Oh, Okay,” she replied sedately. I opened my mouth to speak again, but again she interrupted. “Is your family rich?” Her question made me pause. I rested my own axe on the ground, leaning my weight on it. I thought about her question. Is my family rich?
“More or less,” I finally answered, “Now come on, or we'll get whipped for taking too long.” I immeidietaly regretted saying anything. Her eyes got wide with fear and she let out a wail. “Hey, calm down! We'll be fine as long as we chop wood fast!” I quickly showed her how to chop logs, but her seven year old arms were weak and pretty much useless, so I had to chop twice as fast to get enough wood chopped by the time we were due back- sunhigh. I lifted ten logs, shaking my head in disapproval as she lifted two. “Can't you carry any more?” I complained, but it was obvious she was struggling with the two, so I lifted two more, and we started back to camp.
Once in camp, Hazel and I dropped our wood in the pile, and our chores pretty much flew by. We cleaned Mickey's hut, slaughtered a chicken for Mickey's dinner, collected some tropical fruits for the kids dinner, and made Hazel a shack. I was about to go back to my hut and play with my iPod(Mickey lets me charge it, but he disabled the internet on all my electronics) when Mickey called me. I cringed as I heard my name ring out, and the clearing fell silent. I turned slowly, glancing at Mickey. He's much cleaner than he was when he first kidnapped me, so he's actually slightly attractive...ehm, back to the task at hand. I slunk slowly over to Mickey, my heart beating in my throat and my eyes wide as I did so.
“Yes?” I whispered. It's never good to be called by Mickey. When he calls you, it means you've done wrong and you're about to get whipped. I flinched back in fear as he raised his arm, expecting him to hit me, but he simply set it on my shoulder. I opened an eye, glancing at him. He didn't look mad. I relaxed slightly, standing up tall. I gave a short laugh of amusement as I saw that one, I was taller than Mickey, and two, I'd grown at least four inches since he took me. His face twisted into anger and I flinched back, and he smiled. He loved keeping us in constant fear. I hated the power he had over me, but what's a girl going to do. He reached out a hand, stroking my dirty red hair, gradually dragging his finger down to trace the side of my face, and his finger kept going until it reached my neck, were his finger stopped, but not his eyes. They continued down my tall, slim frame and muscled build, only stopping at my uncovered feet. I shivered. I couldn't help it! It wasn't a sign of pleasure, though, but it's been so long since I've felt any affection. Is it possible for a human body to starve from lack of affection? I guess I'll never find out. I raised my eyes from my feet, staring him defiantly in the eye. His eyes were thoughtful, as though thinking about how to punish me...or how a parent would look if they were thinking about whether or not to but you something you really wanted. It made me uncomfortable. I noticed the others were still staring, and my face flamed from embarrassment. All I wanted was to go home!

NOTE: How do you spell 'immiediately?'
