I'm from Belgium and speak 4 languages: Dutch (mothertongue), french, english and german.

All 4 languages are mandatory subjects in high school (though technical schools may vary from this)

ouch. the only one that is complusory in England to take at GCSE is English Language/English.
Okay most schools encourage you to take at least one foreign language but if you need extra help, (as in you opt for some lessons that aren't a particular subject, so you can concentrate on others better and try and get better grades. It's really only for people who have bad grades or learning disabilites.) then they use the lessons that you'd normally have for a language. So some people only end up with a qualification in their first language.

on of the (dis)advantages of living in a country with 2 (or 3 depending how you look at it) official languages: dutch and french (with poss of german for a limited area).
I'm from Flanders, the dutch speaking part of Belgium. We learn dutch immediatly, french in 5th grade (around 10 years old), english in the second year of high school (age 13) and german in either fourth or fifth year of high school (age 15 and 16 respectivly).
Mind you our scholing system is different then in the US. First is kindergarden, then six years of primary school (6-12) and finally six years of high school (12-18)

So's mine. I'm English.

In the south (mainly Dorset, Somerset and West Hants) of england school goes like this:
nursery= 2.5-4yrs
First school= 4-9yrs (reception-yr4)
Middle school= 9-13yrs (yr5-yr8)
Upper school= 13-16/18yrs (yr9-yr11/13)

But in the rest of the country it goes like this:
nursery= 2.5-4yrs
Primary school= 4-11yrs (Reception-yr6)
Secondary school= 11-16/18 (yr7-yr11/13)

Don't know why there's a difference, there just is. (because we is specshule!!)

Started learning english ASAP, then i started when i was in yr5 (age 9-10) although most people start in yr7 (age 11-12) then i started german in yr9 (age 13-14). In my school i think me and this other guy are only two people doing both subjects at GCSE. (you can choose to stop learning one, but i really didn't want to do Geographie as that's just colouring in.)

You're lucky, we are only able to chose directions not courses in itself in high school
most courses are common so you just can play with the amount of hours you have that course. I myself followed Latin-Modern languages (wich meant 18h of languages a week - latin included), I chose that so I could avoid 6h a week of math plus 2h of physics and 2h of chemistry (I only had 4h of math and 2h of physics with 1h of chemistry)

but you can choose to have less hours of core subjects like maths. (or physics. it's hard to breathe in that lesson cos he stinks and the class room used to stink now, but it's getting knoked down starting tomorrow!!) I have 6hs or maths every timetable cycle and on average have about..4.3h of Physics. (I would have 8hs but because i do triple i have an extra 5 hours, so that's 13hs of science every two weeks, divide by 3=4.3h (on average i don't actually get that amount for physics, i get.. 4hs))
