Tell me a story

It's story time.

Note: every single unnamed kalon that appears or is mentioned here does not truly exist in the kalon world and is only present to complete the story. They could easily be replaced by official kalons, and if I win I will happily find kalons to fill in these gaps.
Also, communication with animals (going all the way to living with them in their family) is not really a power but rather a skill, that any kalon could acquire if they were determined enough, kind of like some people "joining" and being a part of wolf packs in real life.

Grandma, grandma, tell us a story!” shouted a young kit as she climbed onto her grandmother’s knees. Her brother followed, and shouted “Yes, you said that you’d tell us a story once the sun had set, and it just did!”. “Okay, children, okay. Darlings, sit next to me, on either side, please.” she replied, but the excited kits just weren’t listening. They loved their grandmother’s stories and looked forward to sitting in front of the fire and listening to them during the winter holidays, whilst their parents were out eating or just taking a break from the tiring duty of caring for them, and they were now chanting, almost in unison, “Grandma, tell us a story, tell us a story grandma, tell us a story!”.
Their grandmother, who was used to their over excited behaviour when staying over at her house, began telling the story at her own pace. “So, tonight’s story… Okay: once upon a time…” she began, but was interrupted by her grandson. “We’ve heard that story before!” he said. “No, don’t worry, you haven't. All stories start in a similar way, but they’re all different. You’ve never heard this story before,” she calmly replied. “Why can’t you tell us a completely different story? One that starts differently, that no one’s ever heard of, or at least one that ends differently.” said her granddaughter, “We’re too old to believe in fairytales and happily ever afters anymore!”. “Okay, children, if you want, I can tell you a different story. But you must promise to keep quiet whilst I tell it.

So, this story is about a kit named Oliver. This kit lived with his parents, in a big house, in a very big city. But one day, his parents got into trouble. And by that I mean big, big trouble, with very important and powerful people. They knew that if they did nothing, terrible things would happen to them and their son, but they couldn’t stand up against these people, so they fled.
They travelled across the country, and they disguised themselves. Whenever they entered a new city or town, they would slightly alter their appearances, and they would change their names so that nobody ever knew that it was them.
But their son, Oliver, was young and didn’t understand the situation. He was sad and lonely, and his parents’ panicked attitude was making him very unhappy. After a while, his parents realised that it was just getting worse. But, the thing is, his parents were trying to avoid talking to too many people, because the people that they were in trouble with had friends everywhere, and they were scared that despite all of their efforts, someone might recognise them. But their son just looked so miserable that they decided to risk being discovered, and brought him to the town’s local kindergarten. And because of that, the important people managed to catch them.

Nobody knows exactly how they were found - some say that the parents started socialising and let their guards down, and somehow told someone about who they were, whilst others say that Oliver talked about it to his friends, who told their parents, or that he told their parents when they came to collect their children at the kindergarten, although nobody knows, maybe somebody just managed to track them down, or maybe someone had been following them all along and took that opportunity.

But what’s sure is that, a few days later, just when they were getting ready to leave for another place, someone came knocking at their door. The parents had rented a house in the outskirts, near the forest, and when they heard someone knock on their door, they immediately wondered how that person had found their house - it could just have been a lumberjack or hunter asking for help - , but the person just kept on knocking, louder and louder, and they couldn’t hear anything that sounded like shouts for help - in fact, they could only hear the voices of a group of kalons that seemed to be coming closer.

They realised that they had been found and that these kalons were coming to get them, and quietly made their way out through the back door, holding their son in their arms. And then they ran. They ran through the forest as fast as they could, leaping over large roots and pushing their way through thorny bushes. But the father, who was holding Oliver, knew that their son was slowing them down, and that he might not only cause them to get caught, but also get caught if that happened. So he stopped, and placed his son on the higher branches of a nearby tree that was full of leaves, that he only managed to reach because he was quite tall, hoping that Oliver wouldn’t fall down. But that actually slowed the parents down even more, and they were caught. Nobody ever saw them ever again.
And Oliver stayed in the tree and watched as his parents were taken away. After running for so long and just not getting it, he finally understood what was going on and what had just happened, and deemed himself lucky to be standing where he was, and to have such brave and loving parents, that risked their lives to guarantee his safety.

He sat there all night, and all morning too, moving so little that the squirrels in the trees started scuttling past as if he weren’t there, wishing that he could forget about it all - and little by little, he did. He forgot all about his parents, about the rest of his family and about his past life, and once he had, he looked at a nearby squirrel, and just as the last memories of his past life faded away, he decided that from now on, that squirrel would be part of his new family.

And that's how his new life started. He was welcomed into that squirrel’s family and taken care of as a child of their own, and soon learned how to communicate with and understand the birds and critters of the forest - not like one person would talk to another, but rather like different animals do to understand each other, like a cat and a dog would - he was rather skilled in that domain.

So he lived with his squirrel family in a rather large (well, large enough for him to fit into) hole in a tree, high up in the trees, but not in the forest that his parents were caught in. He lived in another nearby forest, because that one had been almost entirely cut down within a year or so, and his new family’d had to move.

And although nobody truly knows which forest he lives in, some say that if you go to that forest very early in the morning, you’ll see Oliver wandering sleepily across the forest floor, sometimes with his two squirrel sisters sleeping on his back.” .

“And that’s it? That story was too short! What if Oliver meets a hunter? What about when he has to leave and live his own life without his new parents? What if the forest burns down?” said her grandson, “I want to know what happens next!”. “Well darling, there’s a forest right next door, isn’t there? That might be Oliver’s forest. Why don’t you go out early with your sister tomorrow to see if you can find him and ask him that yourself?” “I don’t even know what he looks like! How will I know that it’s him and not some other random kalon pulling a prank on me?” “Darling, how would I know? The story says that he looks like a squirrel, but there’s no other information about his appearance… It’s dinner time anyway, we’ll finish talking about this later, okay?”.

And as the grandmother got up and walked away from the fireplace, she glanced at one of the small pictures displayed on the mantelpiece. It was the picture of a small squirrel-like young kit smiling broadly, set down between a picture of two kalons that looked like they could be his parents, on their wedding day, and a picture of her two grandchildren, the ones that were staying at her house.
People had often asked her who those kalons getting married were, and she’d explained every time that those were her eldest daughter and son-in-law, who had decided to cut ties with her side of the family after being very successful in their shared business, and had never visited since.
The grandmother had often wondered what had happened to them, and one day the mice, with whom she had some kind of a special connection - some may call it magic, or sorcery, but she only thought of it as a deep understanding of the critters - brought news of the presence of three members of her family (identified by scent) in a town only a few days’ walk away.
After that, she’d made a few inquiries and put two and two together, and ended up with Oliver’s full story.

She still felt sad thinking about it, and sometimes she wondered if her daughter had been planning on seeking her help, since she had always considered her bond with critters as a superpower that could make many things possible, and she wished that her daughter had found out that the ability had been passed down to her son it was too late.

But now wasn’t the time to think about that. She had to take care of her two other grandchildren. Although, as she turned away from the pictures, she just couldn’t help muttering out loud, in a quiet, whispering tone of voice:
“Oh, poor Oliver…”.

Squirrel for life!

Although Oliver forgot all about his youth and past experiences after he lost his parents, he soon realised that he had a different life before losing his memory:
he found out that he could read and write, and obviously knew that his squirrel parents, as skilled as they may be in the art survival and life in the trees, had not taught him that. He also started missing kalon contact after a few years of living in the trees, and started talking to himself and blabbering on about things that they didn't understand (he was talking to them in English anyway) to forest animals, before deciding to go and talk to passing hunters, mostly to try and convince them not to kill his critter friends, which usually didn't turn out as he wished it had. But after a while,
he decided that he just couldn't do anything about that,
and instead chatted with passersby about town news,
the weather, and what the current season was like with regards to past years and how well crops and fruit/nuts were doing, topics that he talked about with surprising ease considering the fact that he didn't remember ever having an actual conversation involving such trivial things with anyone before.

Regarding his past life, Oliver realises that he must have had a family, but since his memories only go back as far as the memory of sitting in a tree in the middle of the night in a forest in the middle of nowhere, he just supposes that he was abandoned. He considers that he left his old life behind, and that this life is the one that he was always meant to live. He also supposes that he's much happier than he was before, and sometimes wonders why exactly he lost his memory.
What he's sure about, though, is that his happy days with the squirrels are ones he'd never wish to forget.

He has quite a childish, yet neither unreasonable, selfish nor ignorant, way of seeing things, although he has sudden growths in understanding and mental age whenever he's cornered or finds himself in a challenging situation.
He's open to a lot of things, except when it comes to how animals are treated, and cares about the wellbeing of his squirrel family more than anything; he even states that he "lives for them". And of course, that affection and attachment is mirrored back towards him by those four squirrels, who trust him more than anyone else, and also count on him to defend them against bigger mammals since he's quite a bit bigger than they are.

× Please note that Oliver does not think he's a squirrel. He considers himself as one, but knows that he's actually a kalon. In fact, he kept all knowledge acquired during his childhood,
and only forgot about how he learnt it and any information involving where he lived, his lifestyle and his family. ×
