how do you get the currency?

It used to be given instead of runner ups or in exchange for event currency. The only way to currently get copper is through the mating system or from another person for a gg or for art/writing for another person.

Sometimes I have deals for copper from me specifically in exchange for pets or other website currency. Or if there's an orphan adopt by staff then copper can be awarded. I hope this helps!

I may try to do something to keep the community active while I'm around that awards copper. So keep an eye out for that.
