- Spottedhawk --
The lithe she-cat weaved in and out of the boulders in the canyon, looking over her shoulder to mock her brother with a laugh. Leopardtail was fleet-footed, and she always made sure to let her brother know she was faster. "Come on! What's dragging you down?" She mocked again, turning her head just in time to notice a large rock and leap over it. Spottedhawk, panting, tried to catch up to her.
Suddenly, he heard a shocked yowl and the crumbling of earth beneath scrambling paws. "Leopardtail!" The tom yowled as he watched his sister scramble on a crumbling bank. He jumped forward and carefully picked his way to where she struggled. When he reached down to grab her scruff, his jaws clamped down on open air. The tom watched in horror as the ground gave way to the churning river below them. "Leopardtail!" he yowled again. Before he could make the irrational decision of launching himself in after her, one of the two-leg's floating monsters swept down the rapid. Spottedhawk watched as a two-leg swiftly reached out to pull his sister into his grasp where she lay panting and trembling.
Thinking that the group was going to stop at the next beach, Spottedhawk raced along the river to meet her at land. They quickly outpaced him, and when he made it to the stopping point she was no where to be seen.
The tom woke with a start, paws twitching and sides heaving. This dream had been haunting his sleep since his sister disappeared with the two-legs a few moons ago. He couldn't forget the look in her eyes as he watched her disappear in the distance.
He took a long deep breath in trying to calm his nerves and the scent of newcomers flooded his senses. Spottedhawk very deliberately rose to his paws, hoping that the stranger hadn't seen his embarrassing unease. The tom padded lightly over to where his leader stood, but respectfully waited a few tail lengths behind her. He watched the tom carefully through narrowed eyes and sized him up. Honestly, he didn't seem like he could put up much of a fight.
