xxxxxxxxatticus could hear the people downstairs as they prepared the dining hall for the feast that evening. what were they calling it, now? the meeting of the future king and queen? he was certain that the public had come up with something far catchier than that, but he had yet to actually hear it said. atticus found what was happening that day to be very interesting, but also slightly unnerving. he never really assumed that he would get a say in who he married; it just didn't happen like that when you were a future king. usually a kingdom would offer their youngest princess, just as his father had done to his younger sister only a year or so before, to help bring peace amongst the kingdoms and provide pure offspring. it wasn't necessarily unheard of for a farmer to offer their son or daughter as a future spouse to the young princes and princess in hopes of recieving fortune, but it was rare for those offers to be accepted by the royal families. atticus remembered from when he was a young boy that a nearby kingdom did just that; the eldest daughter was ready to be coronated, but they first wanted her to have a spouse. they accepted the proposal from a poor farming family that lived in their village. he hadn't heard anything of the kingdom since, so he assumed everything had gone well, but that didn't stop his own worries from existing.
xxxxxxxxit wasn't difficult to dress for the occasion. armor was unnecessary, as there was no need for fighting of any sort. his father had selected someone to choose his clothing for him, though he only took that as a guideline. he approved of the leather tunic layed out for him, but that was the only thing from the selection he actually wore. he decided on trousers of only a slightly different color, but still something he preferred, along with a pair of boots. after much arguing with a servant who came to speak to him about what he was wearing, he agreed to wear the red cloak that regularly accompanied his armor as well as his crown, though he did debate not putting it on at all.
xxxxxxxxeventually he made his way down to the great hall to help prepare the feast. it would be of minimal capacity, with only the royal family, and the peasant family. he was unsure how large the family was, but based upon the size of the table they had selected for the evening, he decided not very large at all. looking around the hall, it didn't take him long to realize there was little left to do. their staff did generally have wonderful time managment skills, and they had little time left before the arrival of the family, and the beginning of the feast.

Diana had argued with her parents for hours. As the daughter of two peasants, she had never expected to be put into a planned marriage- in her eyes, that had always been something reserved for royalty and nobles. And yet, her hand had just been given to the eldest prince of the kingdom she and her family called home. Finally, she had realized the logic in the decision- she would live in comfort for he rest of her life and her family would receive plenty of riches. It was the best for both of them, she had noticed. Her parents were doing it for her sake as well as theirs, and although she couldn't care less about wealth, she did not want to see her young cousin going hungry. He had been living with them since his parents died of sickness, and she had taken him in as a little brother. And so she had reluctantly accepted, mainly after realizing it was her duty to stop her childish ways and accept the responsibility.

After that, it had all been a bustle of activity to prefer for their first time meeting. Her father had put some hard-earned coins into getting his only daughter a dress that was actually somewhat nice, albeit simple- a long green gown that swept the floor and had plain white lace bordering the edges of the sleeves, neckline, and bottom seam. After her blonde hair had been brushed and put up on the top of her head, with a few stray curls hanging around her face, her eight year old cousin had admired her with wide eyes, as though observing a glamorous queen. It was Lucas that made the decision bearable- he deserved a better lifestyle.

That brought her to where she was now- being escorted to the heavy wooden doors leading to the dining hall. Two guards flanked her on either side, her parents and cousin a few steps behind. Despite herself, Diana could not help being slightly nervous. She was meeting royalty, after all. She had been raised in a small farming village- how was she to know how to act in front of these people? Still, she would try her best. By now, she'd found herself wanting to do this, mainly because it would help her family. They had taken care of her up until here, and now it was her turn to take care of them. If that meant marrying into nobility, well, so be it.

The doors swung open and she stepped inside, father quickly taking up the spot by her side. She gave him a slight smile, glad he was there. Then her eyes found the prince- a handsome man, no doubt, but what would his character be like? Diana supposed there was only one way to find out.

xxxxxxxxatticus stood in the center of the hall speaking with one of their servants. the man was from out of the region, but he had been with them since before atticus was born, and was their chief of staff. it wasn't difficult to tell that hugo was getting frustrated with him -- atticus had a habit of being stubborn at the worst of times. hugo had been somewhat of an uncle to him, he was part of the family at this point, and since he was there, atticus had found it appropriate to discuss the terms of the marriage agreement with him, assuming he knew more than the prince did at that point. and there was no doubt that he hadn't been wrong, even though hugo refused to tell him anything, the refusal itself was key to the truth. so, of course, atticus continued to nag him. he was still trying to get him to speak to him about it when he heard the doors open behind him. it didn't occur to him in any sort of manner that it could possibly be their guests arriving, as he was more intent on annoying hugo. they bickered for another good thirty seconds before the servant lost his patience and smacked the prince in the back of the head -- which was well deserved, even atticus could agree -- and pushed his shoulder so he ended up turning and looking at the door.
xxxxxxxxthis would be the moment that atticus realized it was ten minutes til the feast was scheduled to begin, and that the family he was looking at would indeed be the family that he had been hearing about for months. the family of farmers, with an only daughter and a nephew they took care of. atticus had seen many farmers, however none looked anything like these four did. it was probable, of course, that they had dressed specifically for the occasion; they were, after all, meeting royalty, and atticus could imagine that it was quite a feat for people of their social standings. it was rare that atticus, or anyone in his family for that matter, would speak the words they thought to themselves. they would never outwardly call a farming family peasants, or 'lower-class' citizens. he had been taught from a young age to respect all those he ruled over as much as those that he didn't.
xxxxxxxxit took him a few moments to realize that now would be the time to introduce himself, and when that did dawn on him, he was joined by his mother, who glared at him in what he assumed was response to the way he had already been acting that evening. morea edwards. she was born in a distant kingdom whom atticus's grandfather wanted to trade resources with. she was a kind woman, really, but she scared the hell out of atticus on a regular basis. he followed her without thought as she walked up to the family, he was taller than her so it was easy to take her in stride, though he chose to stay a few steps behind. when his mother stopped, atticus continued to keep his distance of step or too and stopped as well.
xxxxxxxxwatching his mother bow in greeting to peasants was completely baffling to atticus, but he made no move to say anything, or even move for that matter. "it's lovely to have you here. i am queen morea," atticus listened as his mother introduced herself and welcomed them to the castle.
