🐘 Okavango Wildlife Reservation 🦁 -Open!

The animals that we've known and loved since childhood are in danger. Many species of Africa's most famous wildlife are starting the make the endangered list, with only humans to blame. Can you image a world without stories of lions and elephants? These beautiful creatures are being hunted and systematically destroyed by poachers. These illegal hunters' methods have become so fierce and organized that reservations are having to protect themselves with near military-like forces.

Okavango sits on an open savanna in Botswana, Africa. It was opened back in the 80's as a wildlife reservation and sanctuary. Since then, their mission has stayed the same: protect South Africa's diverse fauna. They have run for many years off of government funds and donations, and now, they are opening their doors for a new program. Young zoologist majors from around the world are being invited to come for the summer and shadow experts and specialists of their field. The collage students are chosen by an essay and project contest. The top ten winners are flown to Okavango and put up for two whole months to study and experience the animals they have only seen at zoos and museums.

The intentions of this program is to teach the newer generations the importance of conservation. But while this sanctuary may seem like heaven, our young students may just be thrust into a warzone. Will they be able to fend off the money hungry poachers?

The Park

The Okavango Reservation covers over 950 square miles. Maintaining the fencing alone requires a full time staff. One can imagine the cost that goes into a park such as this. It boasts a state of the art veterinary clinic and recovery program. Injured wildlife from all over the park, and even some from outside, are brought in for treatment. The goal is always re-release, but if the animal is unable to be freed, then they may be kept inside small habitats near the park's headquarters.

The park have five separate stations across it's territory: The Orchid, The Heron, The Arrow, The Flame, and The Pearl. Each station is equipped with a vet clinic, a full staff, and full equipment. The Orchid is the main headquarters, where the students will be spending most of their time.

Locations within the park:

Abeo River
A river that runs through the south end of the park. It's a popular watering spot for the park's resident elephant herd. This also makes it a hot spot for poachers.

Mount Mosi
A scenic, white capped mountain that watches over the Savannah. It's a popular tourist destination. About twice a year, the park hosts a guided tour to the top as a fundraiser.

Gahiji Plateau
A large, table top mountain near the western border of the park. It's a sight that one of the park's lion prides frequents.

The sun rose over the savanna, already teaming with life. As some animals went back to their nests and borrows, others emerged. The birds took flight, and the herds began to move. They had survived another night.

Dust kicked up from the dirt road that lead towards the Orchid station. A dark green Jeep made its bumpy way along the path, approaching the campus slowly. The man at the wheel wore a drab green uniform and had a loaded rifle in his passenger seat, although he rarely used it. As he pulled into the designated parking area, he turned off the jeep and grabbed his gun before he hopped out.

He was greeted at the door by one of the researched, who smiled and clapped him on the back.

"Khari! Good timing. We'll be getting our new students in soon," The man said.

The officer smiled. "That's wonderful. I forgot that was happening today. I was hoping to use the facilities for a while, but I can leave if you need me to."

"Oh, no, of course not. I was actually hoping you could give a short lesson on what you do around here. Maybe you can recruit yourself a few future candidates."

"A lesson?" Khari seemed a bit wary. The other man shrugged.

"Well, you know, just a brief run through. You don't have to break out any text books or anything."

Khari nodded, then looked down at his uniform, dusty and smudged from the night out in the bush. "Maybe I should clean up first?"

As the two men spoke, a white bus was making its way up the long dirt road. This bus held the new students, the contest winners, who would be shadowing the researchers and biologists for the next couple months. It was sure to be an interesting summer.

Mori had gotten to the reservation early that morning.
He'd been watching the lions. People usually found him
sitting outside the pen, watching them do whatever. Mori
had headphones on and was listening to The Beatles, his
favourite band. He loved how upbeat the songs were and
Paul McCartney. Mori absolutely loved Paul. He smiled to
himself as he watched the lions sleepily roll in the dust.

James rubbed his forehead, hair sticking in all directions from his slumber. The heat from the African plains wafted into his room, filling the area with a sort of steaming fog. He rolled off of his cot and jumped up onto his feet. He stumbled over to his bathroom, taking a brisk, cold shower and wrapped a towel around his waist while brushing his teeth. Afterwards, the vet got dressed, cargo pants and a tan, stained muscle shirt, like usual. He tugged in his boots and walked out the thin door. He entered the building he was supposed to be at for the introduction, nodding to the guard. He walked to the front and climbed up the stairs that led to the stage. Taking his seat, anxiety sparked within him. He didn’t know why but it jut did. He fumbled around with his necklace while he waited for the hoard of students to flood in.

Blake- 23- Female- Gay- Open

Blake tapped her fingers on the edge of the window anxiously, her gaze set on the dust on the side of the road. Her hair was messy and her clothes were worn but she was happy to finally be off of a plane. She was wearing a tank top with a Black Stone Cherry album cover printed on the front, and the red in the lettering matched the flush on her face and neck. She wasn't used to the heat, let alone the sun. She had come from a very cold Calgary, and had spent the last two days trying to not look like she had just run a mile. She had come to the conclusion she was burned, and that there was no hope. She stopped tapping the window long enough to look ahead of them at the buildings coming in to view, shifting in her seat a bit in anticipation.

amerigo reis | 29 | he/him | doctor | tagging: james
Amerigo had always been an early riser. By the time most people were just starting to get up and dressed, he'd already been up for a while. He only partly blamed his nerves for this, though Amerigo worried less about what others would think of him and more about what the new students might screw up. Call him cold, maybe, but having seen a few groups of students come and go, he knew better than to cut them any slack. (Or maybe he just didn't want to.)
Amerigo made his way to the stage, the doctor minding his own business as he did so. He didn't bother to acknowledge anyone until he was seated next to James, and only then did he look over and nod at the other man in acknowledgement. Conversation had never been a strong point for Amerigo, after all.

uyu udo | 26 | she/her | specialist: artoidactyla | tagging: mori
Uyu groaned dramatically as she woke up- not that anyone was around to here that, and she was pretty thankful for that, because Uyu was known as anything but a drama queen. She intended to keep it that way. She got up, letting her hair down and pulling on her usual jeans and t-shirt before leaving to take care of her daily work. However, on her way out, she noticed a boy she didn't recognise sitting by the lion pen. Curious, the tall woman walked over quietly, sneaking up unintentionally on the boy and crouching down to rest a hand on his shoulder to get his attention. "You lost or something?"

James
Vet-Male-Tags: Amerigo

James swallowed nervously. “H-Hi Amerigo. Ready for today?” He asked, clearing his throat, still playing with his necklace rapidly. He didn’t know why he was nervous. Why would he be? It’s not like he was getting any students. Hope sparked in his chest. ‘Maybe I will.’ He pondered happily ‘Someone that I can train and be proud of!’ He gave a half smile and waited for his friend’s answer.
