Shadow of the Day, as his name implies, is not your usual, kindhearted, lover-of-all Equid. He has standards that must be met by all around him, no matter their circumstance, and is unsympathetic towards those showing weakness. In his mind, to have a flaw is to be beatable, and to be beatable is to have already lost. Of those close to him, none remain as allies, having seen the damage he has done. Even his own daughter, Shadow tried to control, resulting in her having a breakdown that separated their family and drove him and Beautiful Chaos from their herd. Even as rogues they separated, preferring to risk fewer numbers in the dangerous mountain landscapes than be forced into cooperation. Shadow prefers to pretend his daughter does not exist, and whenever she speaks he barely contains his annoyance, although he is not without provocation. Chaos seems to enjoy embarrassing her father in front of potential mates and lead mares, acting foolish and air-headed so that they will think his offspring have something wrong with them.
Ambition runs strong in Shadow's mind, lending him to consider every situation he encounters for the benefits possible courses of action would give himself. He is almost like a politician, wanting to do whatever it takes to be in the throne of the Equid social hierarchy: lead stallion. In his old herd, Shadow challenged the lead constantly, trying to weaken him enough to take his place at the head of the herd. Even though he never accomplished this, being herd leader is a priority in this vengeful stallion's mind. He acts with the forethought of one seeking personal gain.
Aloneness- a state in which many Equids would be terrified, scrambling as fast as their long legs could carry them back to the herd, any herd, away from predators and dangers that prey on the unlucky ones singled out by mother nature. Shadow of the Day finds himself at peace only when there is no one to interrupt him or influence him, asserting their desires over his. Time to think is something he values greatly; it is guaranteed to be a productive session of plotting, strategizing, or working over a latest problem. Meditation is to some Equids, of a more philosophical nature, a parallel to Shadow's fondness for being away from other living things. It makes him feel like he can breath.
They say a sense of humor is a wonderful characteristic for anyone to have. While Shadow isn't really a knock-knock kind of stallion, he often finds himself appreciating the irony of a situation, sharing a private smile with his twisted sense of humor. If only some Equids could see the positions they put themselves in, surely they would laugh, too. Part of the reason these ironies are so clear to him is because Shadow is intelligent, he likes to think. The brain of an analyst, cold and detached, with a removed interest in his surroundings, rests inside his grey head. He loves to play out possible scenarios in his mind to find the right course of action. Should I leave him here? What about the other Equids, would they miss him? Could I be connected to this event? What about an alibi?
If he wanted to, Shadow might have been able to make it to the top the normal way, but where's the fun in that? It's too late for him to play the nice game anyways, since most Equids are aware of who he is and what he is capable of. To them, Shadow walks a fine line between sanity and insanity. To himself, Shadow is engineered to get what he wants.
