I absolutely adore foxes! I'd love to own a gray fox one day, or a corsac. They aren't as smelly as reds and arctics and usually spread their scent by rubbing things like a cat, rather than spraying. I'd still love a red, especially an arctic marble! Unfortunately, foxes are not legal were I live. Not really in a position to own one right now anyway, but it still sucks.

Half an acre seems excessive, especially for a fennec. I usually see something around 20x20ft. suggested for one red, but that's if they get plenty of interaction and time out of the enclosure (while in a harness, of course). At my zoo though I saw two reds in an enclosure that looked smaller. Anyway, fennecs are primarily insectivores, so they don't need a whole lot of meat. Though if you were to feed primarily meaty foods, I have heard that rabbit meat is the best choice. And yeah, fennecs need more of their own kind... So make that $4k. Fennecs aren't really my cup of tea though.

But yes! Foxes are a lot of work. The enclosure will need to be topped, and chicken wire should be used as flooring so they don't dig out (but that'll mean you'll need to provide a digging box to satisfy their digging desires). Also, fox kits are small enough to slip through chain link, and fennecs and even grays stay small enough to slip through. So that's important to know.

Also, I want to point out that foxes can remain tame throughout their life. They still have instincts of course, and will go through hormonal changes and what not as they grow, but they don't have to be a hands-off and visual-only animal. I know a few people who own foxes and claim they can be sweet and fun to interact with.

that is not to much^^
you need this ,to better approximate the animals' natural environments, to keep them from going grazy and getting aggressive the older they get. this animals live in this enclosures most of the time, and only get visits by there owner or friends of them now and then...so you should attempt to replicate their natural habitats or behavioral patterns, for the benefit of both the animals and visitors...trees, brushes, a hill, some small and large stones ...so you can say that providing more space as the absulute min. that some say this or that animal should atleast have :!: and behavioural enrichments is needed to Keep them healthy, happy and long living..... it should allow the animals to express some of their natural behaviours, such as roaming and foraging, runnig, jumping, digging...

found this on one page :absolute minimum of 100 square feet is needed. If multiple foxes are to be kept in the same enclosure, start with a base of 100 square feet, and then add an additional 50 square feet for each fox in the enclosure (so an enclosure to keep 3 foxes should be a minimum of 250 square feet.) Keep in mind that these are the absolute minimums. If at all possible, your fox’s outdoor enclosure should be muchmuch more bigger. The more room you can give them while keeping them safe and secure, the happier they will be.

The enclosure should be in a safe location. Ideally, it should be protected by a privacy fence, and invisible from the road, to discourage curious passerby or those with bad intentions. Inspect the area you’re considering turning into a pen. Avoid marshy ground or standing pools of water, as these indicate drainage issues that will not be easy to fix. If you build the enclosure on a slope, keep in mind that foxes love to dig in well-drained, sloped soil, so you will need to take even more precautions against dig outs.

The last thing you need to consider about location is exposure. Your pet will need to be sheltered from the elements. Consider if your chosen location has a windbreak and a source of shade; if either of these things is lacking, you will need to come up with a means of providing them.
that is only or US

-Like other animals, foxes can contract sarcoptic mange (treatable in humans) and toxoplasmosis (a threat to pregnant women or people with weak immune systems). Foxes can carry rabies and the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis, both of which can be fatal to humans. The RSPCA does not condone keeping foxes as pets “because foxes are wild animals, their needs are very specific and require specialist care”. Very few people have the amount of land, the facilities and the time that foxes require.

-As Bowler says: “99 per cent of people keeping foxes as pets would have a nightmare with it. They need you and you’ve committed to them. If you go away you can let someone look after your dogs, but not your foxes.”

and you can get a visit out of the blue once a year, animal and Pplant Health Inspection Services, or such, who can control if you are violating any of the animal welfare act

Well I wasn't looking into making a caresheet or anything, I was just giving a few basic points to consider when getting a fox, and I am not a fox owner so I am not qualified to be spouting too much information. But yes. I agree. It is important to provide foxes with natural enrichment. I was just thinking half an acre is excessive as I have never seen a fox enclosure that large (not in person, anyway). The best way to get info on caring for foxes is by talking to fox owners, which I have done, and getting experience working with them. Either way, no matter what you'll always have different people of all backgrounds giving their own "ideal" for caring for an animal. After all, there isn't only one specific way to care for any animal.

I typically avoid looking into what the ASPCA, RSPCA, HSUS, etc have to say as such powers are usually corrupt. I'd much rather talk to those that have experience with the animals.

@ косатка
no worry, and sorry when i did come wrong over to you with wha i did write^//^ i also only did want to give some more ideas to keeping foxes, what to look for and such( so that those who did not know much or something can maybe learn a tiny bit more about them when there was sommething they did not know, i still learn, so it is not much^//^ )
^_^ i love o talk about things like keeping different animal breeds, what people learned is good or bad and what should be changed and so on, and as there are not many people here who talk it is nice to see other who learned a bit about them an maybe find moore people^^
i really did not mean something bad with the half acre, i did see this at a small...let say mini wild animal farm thing...they did got baby foxes and other wild animal to take care of till grown up enough and trained for wild the releasing them...but they had a pair(both where fixed and one or was it two young ones who could not be release...they where at half an acre outdoor run with an small house as shelter and some natural shelter...i really liked the look..a that the ffoxes where so happy and tame to the owner...both where from bad owner with tiny kennel and the owners id help them such a long way and got thee trust and love from the foxes^^)

that is true what you say...always bether to learn from different or one real good owner, they can tell and Show one so much, and one even can help out taking care of there foxes or fennec to learn more^^ great that you do this..it iss always sad when someone did not do it like you but did go an got a willd animal and then god the bad wakeup call

corrupt yes..?good to know!
did not look much into them, only looked for rules to keep wild animal and such..and mostly go with what some good nice wildparks and wildanimalrescues and those who take care of babys or hurt wild animal and owner did write or told^^

and in our old zoo we got two arctic foxes together with 2old bear...i think they make there live interesting, the old one get more lively and move around more than bevor, and the foxes try to get some of there food now and then and get more clever, its interesting...they have 2 two new shy foxes whom i did forgot what breed they where, the person who did take care of them did say that it was a bit dificult that they realeased them in the big new run so soon..., after they got them, as still to nervous with human, and as they are so fast and so many places to hide^^ but it was cute

Hope you write more of what you did learn, and do learn ,i really like to know more :D

I enjoy spreading information I learn about animals. I just try to avoid it somewhat so I don't spread misinformation (even with animals I have owned, I'm paranoid about accidentally spreading false information). A fox owner knows what works for them and what doesn't. I don't because... well I don't own a fox (yet ^-^).

I do know a few other things worth mentioning though. For one, foxes often relieve themselves in their water dishes. Some fox owners have suggested to place their food and water dish in a box with holes cut out only big enough for them to stick their head into. You can litter train them, but it is difficult. And even if you do, they may not use their litter box 100% of the time. Fennecs usually relieve themselves wherever... including where they sleep. So they can be quite messy. Arctics need special care in most climates, which I suppose is quite obvious. They need an air-conditioned shed and a chilled pool. So they may be a bit more expensive to keep than other foxes. Also, if your fox were to ever bite someone and is reported, it would be euthanized and tested for rabies, even if the fox has gotten its rabies vaccination. Very important to be aware of that.

As for enclosure size, bigger is better if you can manage it. It's just not a requirement to have an enclosure that large, given that they have plenty of enrichment to keep them mentally and physically fit.

Experience is important for any animal. Someone may think they know all there is to know, and think they can handle it, but you never really know what it is like until you actually start taking care of one. So I really want to interact with and help care for some foxes someday, certainly before I get a fox of my own.

I'm sure I'll have multiple foxes, and of multiple species too. Multiple foxes may be a requirement if I were to get corsacs or fennecs, seeing as they often live in skulks. So I don't see why I couldn't buy and adopt. Though I have heard some say that rescues don't do all that great in their new home and never settle down. However, I know of someone who owns a rescue fox named Carousel. They have a curled tail like a spitz dog, likely because of poor nutrition in their previous home. Anyway, I saw a video of them and they seem nice and fun! Either way though, I am sure a rescue wouldn't be all that great for a beginner, but I would love to rescue one someday.

While they are very very cute, people don't realize how... 'undomesticated' they are. In that EVERY fennec fox will become scared of humans once they reach adulthood. Every time. And while it would still probably stay relatively trustful towards their owner, you wont be able to play with it or chase it or even feed it by hand once it becomes an adult. I've watched videos of this guy who owns/has owned many exotic pets, and currently has a fennec fox. He's raised it since a pup and in his videos it will only come up to him for a second then bolt if he moves or talks too loud. Apparently (if you get a male, which will be VERY likely as few breeders will sell their females) a go through a severe humping stage too. So while owning a fennec would be amazing in theory, know that it will hide from everyone including yourself and will only be a friendly, cuddly pup for several months. And what's so unfortunate is that fennec breeders will never tell potential buyers this because it detours most people form buying them :(

I'd definitely recommend getting a red or a silver fox instead, as they have been bred as pets for much longer than fennec and will go through a less severe fear-of-humans transition once an adult
