She had a rattie sister named Sniffles, who sadly had to be euthanized at 1 & 1/2 years old because she had a cancerous mammary tumor. It's been 2 months since her death.
I've read that rats should always be kept in at least pairs, because rats are very social and can become lonely. But since Dippy is an old woman, I'm not sure if another rat would be ideal since Dippy might have to pass on soon as well.
Should I get another rat for her? Or would it not be ideal regarding her age?
The recommendation I recieved from a vet was to not get her a new playmate.
I always emphasize that rats must be kept in pairs, but as they grow older, in certain cases this changes.
This decision depends on your rat. Is she doing well or slowing down? If she is slowing down it is better to not get a new companion. A new rat brings in stress and competition before they become friends. If you can, try visiting your vet (or just ask them next time you bring her in) because they will have the best advice suited to Dippy specifically.
I definitely wouldn't recommend getting one young rat, as it will probably bother her for attention. Two is a better idea, but it is possible they may gang up on her seeing as she is not as fast and weaker than them. An old rat is probably your best option age-wise, but once one of them passes away you'll have the same problem again.
If you can spend lots and lots of time with her and she seems to be slowing down a bit, I probably wouldn't get another rat. If she is still spunky and playful, I think you could probably get her a companion <3
