that's so cute! i absolutely love rays. i went hand-feeding + snorkelling with rays a few years back in the Bahamas, they're so smooth. not something i'd love to keep/maintain, though. i wouldn't be able to live myself if something were to ever happen to it!

yes, i'd love to see photos! even progress ones, too. c': yikes, a cat would not bode well with a sprinkler system haha. if you create a deep pond, raccoons won't dig in there because they don't like water. OR you could just run out in your pjs and slippers with a broom and charge at the predators with a warcry. all up to you. ;P

i'm pretty fortunate that i live in the uk, the main predators are really just cats because foxes can't get into my garden :p but the idea of charging at the racoons definitely made me laugh!

Rays are super difficult to keep - but, my dad's been taking care of fishtanks since before i was born (So over 28 years)
He got into it for my mother, while he also enjoys it (Reef tanks specifically), my mother always wanted to live by the beach, and we don't. So, he brought the beach to her.

Now we have stingrays because they're moms favorite. 2 of them. My mothers is named Cleo, and mine is named Hera. They're so sweet. Cleo loves being hand fed, and getting back rubs from my mother. Where Hera is more of a wild child, and prefers hunting her food and splashing. lol. Hera's only about a year old, though. Where cleo would be around 3ish.

Aw, they sound like they have such distinct, interesting personalities. What types are they?

Goldfish would do quite well in a pond, especially since they will get big lol.
I've always wanted a pond as well. Only a Koi pond instead, with a giant Pleco in it too

Haha yeah, it's pretty unfair to keep goldfish in a tank where they can't be as big as they can possibly be. I looooove koi fish, if I ever have the room one day I'd love a huge pond that I could have some koi and a pleco too!

Planted tanks can be difficult to keep as well. I'd suggest for your first one going for "Low light" plants. they'll pretty much grow in any environment, and are easy to care for. If you have a nearby Aquatics store, i'd def. ask them about that. to name a few i know off the top of my head: Any Anubias, Anachris, and i've had great success with Moneywort as well.

Oh the amount of tanks i, and my parents combined have now is nothing to how it used to be. At the largest amount, we had 18.
a good 6 of them were to feed my obsession with Betta fish, though haha.
Now that i'm in a new house with my buddies, there's less room for tanks - and they're aren't HUGE into aquatics like i am.

Oh goodness, lets see if i can name all the babies in my tanks. well, named the species - even though they all do have their own nicknames :p

My house:
55g fresh. Dwarf Flame Gourami, 3 Glo-barbs (pink), 2 Glo-Tetras (Blue and pink), 1 Bleeding heart tetra, 2 blue mystery snails, etc shrimp for algae upkeep, 4 pygmy corydoras, 1 Sumo loach, and 1 Upsidedown catfish. (Soon, a baby Longfin bristlenose Plecostomus)

Betta tank. Purple Dumbo Betta, Named Barney.

10g Micro tank (planning): Mostly going to keep Small shrimp in it, Like little Cherry shrimp. And a few Scarlet Badis.

Parents house:

55g Community reef (Saltwater)
Clownfish, Blue tang, Lawnmower blenny, Velvet shrimp, Peppermint shrimp.

300g Stingray tank.
2 Female stingrays, 1 Blue Mandarin, 1 Filefish, 1 Copperband butterfly.

100g Freshwater:
2 Clown loaches (were mine at one point), 1 Lohachata Botia Loach, 1 Chocolate gourami, 2 Cory cats, 1 Upsidedown catfish, and scattered Mollies and Platys.

8g puffer tank (freshwater): 1 Pygmy puffer (I wanna say it's sold as a green puffer)

Baby tank (freshwater) Soooooo many Endlers guppies.

Oh rays are fantastic. Never snorkled with them - or with anything, really. lol. Went to the ocean like...Once. So, most of my experience with them is at Aquatic stores, Aquariums, or my house + online.
We actually lost 2 of them. was quite sad.

We got Cleo, along with a Male that was supposed to by "My" pet. I named him Zeus, and he INSTANTLY attached to me. Always wanted attention and back rubs, and would only handfeed from me. He would wrap his "wings" around my hand, and gently eat from my fingers. was so cute.
But, he had an internal infection we didn't catch in time. Cleo had it as well, and we were at least able to save her - thankfully.

and the second one was actually a baby. Zeus had apparently Mated with Cleo, unknown to us. She had one pup, and she looked EXACTLY like Zeus did. So, i "claimed" her, and named her Xena. She wouldn't eat, and the Specialist vet (only one in town) wouldn't sell us a "feeder" (Don't know the exact name. but it's a tube that would force her to eat, until she did on her own) without us seeing her at an appointment. But, she was booked for 2 weeks and would not see us before then.
Dad ordered a small one (used on kittens) online, but by the time it arrived she had already passed. </3

It's very rough to lose any fish, so we all took it pretty hard.
Which is also why we chose to get a female, rather than a male.
*knock on wood* we haven't had any issues with them for the past year, so here's hoping that continues.

Commonly they're called "California" stingrays, as that's where they're most often found. But they're also known as Hallars stingrays

Phew! Sorry for the Long post. LOL.
I type very slow, and wanted to be sure to respond to everyone

I would post a picture of my 55, as it's sitting right in front of me.
But, had a bit of an issue today - the battery in my remote for the light died. SO, my roommate and i are gonna head out and try to get a new battery for it.
So, no light as there isn't an On/off switch.
It's like one of those super fancy lights that you can set colors on, or make it have a thunderstorm, or look like clouds are passing by.
So, while it's UNDERSTANDABLE that there wouldn't be an on/off switch because of the complexity of it, i still want one. haha.

And my Sumo loach, Named Senpai, REALLY isn't happy about that. LOL. he keeps coming up to the top of the tank, by the filters and splashing water with his tail.

Yeeeaah lol. He used to have a brother. His name was Baka.
He really lived up to his name.
Reason i named him that is because he would get "Lost" in the tank so easily. He'd, say, swim to a plant and would just stay there and freak out. Like he didn't know how to get out. He would do this until another fish would bump him to the correct direction.
or, there's a little grumpy gills in there. He's a Bleeding heart tetra, and his name is Rumple. He likes to claim different areas in the tank, and then chase people away from them if they get too close. He never harms them, just chases.
Anyways, Baka would ALWAYS go up to rumple. He'd be chased away, would brood in the corner for a moment, and then go right back and do the same thing.
