I'm working on a drawing with the new calves and didnt see anything about horn growth XD

Oooh, interesting question!

I haven't put too much thought into it before but I'd like to think that they start growing more visible around 1-1.5 year of age and that they don't reach full length until they've reached the upper teens (17-19), so they grow for a very long time. Perhaps the lower set of horns doesn't start showing up until the kirin is at least around 8-10 years old.

Ah! Thanks so much for such a quick response!

I think its an interesting idea to have the lower horns grow in at a different age. You'd be able to have a pretty good idea of age by looking at the horn growth on a given male - are there any kind of visual changes that females go through at a certain age?

Sorry for all these random questions, haha!

No, it's perfectly fine, just ask away!

The most visible change in females, is the thickness of the tail and the feathering on their legs become more noticeable as they grow older. As they are born they have close to no feathering at all and their tail doesn't have anywhere near as much hairs as a grown kirin does. This would probably be done growing a few years after reaching maturity.

Great questions, Folk c:
I've actually been wondering about that kind of thing for kirins recently as well, I have a couple sketches of my three as calves, maybe I'll upload them on my DA later so you guys can see :3
I feel like I haven't been giving them enough love recently :U That's gonna change! <3

Just for giggles, I thought I'd share the lines for the calves I've been working on. I haven't had a chance to go in and edit the lines since learning about the horns/tails on calves so its TECHNICALLY INCORRECT AUWH NOOO

But hey! Still fun to share haha xD

Also: Kirin faces. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING
Any hints/tips/tricks or animals you would use as face reference?

Those are adorable, I just want to cuddle them ;u;
Their faces look fine to me! The references I've used for this and that while drawing kirins have always been that of deer, since that seems the closest real-life species to me, but I'm curious to see what Reiki says :3

Deer faces are good references, yes~
I mainly use bigger antelopes as references, like the greater kudu, mountain nyala and the gemsbok. c:

And those lines are adorable. ;u;
