As her eyes skimmed over the last few pages of her novel, Isabelle could have sworn she saw something out of the corner of her eye. She put her book down and sat up but whatever it had been had moved along. She packed up her things and moved slowly between the rows to find the source. Sure other students were coming and going but intuition told Isabelle that it wasn't them. She stopped abruptly when she happened upon a class and remained out of their sight. Her eyes skimmed over the class lazily but her curiosity peaked when she spotted one person in particular.

Of course.

It was the same boy Isabelle had bumped into just the day before. She was convinced it had been him. Isabelle waited for the teacher to get distracted with something before walking up behind him.

"Scared to say hello?" She leant over his shoulder and kept her voice low.

Connor yelped at the sudden voice and turned to look at Isabelle, "O-oh hello..." He glanced at the teacher and his classmates before returning his attention to her. The male bit his lip and returned to his work. Connor had hoped she wouldn't spot him yet she had. "Did... did you need something?" He kept his voice quiet as he glanced to her. The male checked his pocket for the two stones

“Well, there’s the stutter.”

She walked around and stood in front of him. The only thing between them was the desk. Isabelle noticed the robot's absence and she considered it being in the bag until she remembered how much it seemed to hate it. Surely she would hear it chirping from where she stood if it were to be in his bag.

“Thought I saw someone heading towards me out of the corner of my eye,” She shifted her weight, “and then low and behold, look who I find.”

There were a lot of things that Isabelle didn’t believe in and coincidences were near the top of her list. The only things to surpass it were Bert and Ernie being straight and the Loch Ness Monster’s existence.

“So maybe I should be asking you that question.” She rested her hands on the desk and leant on them.

"I.. I didn't want anything. I was just looking for my class" Connor felt the stones carefully before glancing away from her. He briefly thought about the bot he had left at home. The male hoped it wasn't getting into too much trouble without him being there. He then turned his attention to the girl in front of him as he started to pull the black stone from his pocket. The bot must've given it to him to give to her. He might as well get it done now and just leave all this in the past

Isabelle didn’t believe him for a second. Not that she took anything said to her at face value. She pushed off the table and stood back up. She pressed her fingers to her temple and sighed – maybe she was just being a little paranoid. Isabelle noticed the way he continued to fumble with something in his pocket and assumed it was another nervous tick along with his stutter.

“Yeah, okay.” She adjusted the bag straps on her shoulder. “I’m outta here then.”

In that she meant more than just the class or the library on a whole. She wanted out of the school and she knew exactly where she was headed as she left. She checked the time on her phone as she approached the library doors as if it mattered. Isabelle’s favourite diner was open until well after dark. Being a stepbrother-free zone as well as serving greasy food and the occasional brawl in the car park, Isabelle frequented it more than she probably should. In fact she was surprised her stepparents hadn’t caught her there during school hours.

Connor would've tried to follow her to give her the stone but the teacher had called his name to answer. He quickly gave the answer before glancing around for Isabelle. Sadly, she was already gone and he was left to think about how bad he was at delivering things. Maybe he could just find her after school?

Isabelle snuck around the halls and took her first chance at getting out. It wasn’t a hard feat when classes were in. She passed only a couple of students – some headed for bathrooms while others were skipping themselves. None of them paid her any attention as she passed and soon enough she was out of the school grounds.

The walk to the diner took all of around five minutes and without interruption. Isabelle arrived out front and noticed the emptiness of the carpark – that was nothing out of the ordinary. Aside from a couple of beat up cars, there were a few motorbikes to fill some of the spaces. She had always wanted one but Isabelle was confident that her stepparents wouldn’t have it.

She pushed open the door and skipped straight up to the counter. She pulled out one of the stools and took her place. As she waited for service, she hummed along to the old rock song that played in background. After a moment the waitress returned to the bar and smiled. Most of the staff were well acquainted with Isabelle and those who weren’t had surely heard about her.

“Tell me the coffee is still hot,” Isabelle said.

“You’re later than usual but yes.”

Isabelle rolled her eyes and took the mug between her hands when it was placed in front of her. She didn’t bother adding anything to it, preferring the bitterness. She continued to small talk with the waitress until work pulled her away, leaving Isabelle to her own devices.

The school day was soon done for Connor. He waited in front of the school to see if he could spot the girl he had seen earlier today but she never showed up. Connor frowned before beginning his walk home. He briefly wondered if the bot had gotten into trouble and if he would be upset that he was unable to deliver the stone. The male sighed and just hummed a careful tune on his way home

It wasn't hard for Isabelle to wait out her day at the diner. She alternated between socialising with the staff and rereading her novel. On the odd occasion the radio would play a song she knew and she would sing along, which encouraged others to join. However, she didn't plan on staying at the diner after dark and knew it would soon be time to leave. At present she was back to talking with the waitress.

"...That's all I'm saying, I mean you're all bark and no bite."

"What if I got one of these bikers to give me a ride home, does the count?" Isabelle fired back.

The regret was all over the waitress's face but her words were out and Isabelle had found the challenge in them. While the older woman tried to convince Isabelle otherwise, the girl was already up out of her seat. The bikers all sat at the same back table and most of them were regulars. The older males cheered as she drew near; Isabelle had gotten involved in a couple of their fights in the past. Some pleasantries with some charm were all it took to rope one of them in. Isabelle called out a goodbye as she passed the counter on her way to the door. She climbed on the back and while the rider fixed his helmet, Isabelle pulled her hair back. He snatched a helmet from the bike beside them and passed it to her. She rolled her eyes at the safety measure but didn’t voice her disdain. Holding on, they pulled out and teared down the road.

When they finally pulled up out front, Isabelle noticed the lack of cars in the driveway. Her brothers had training and she assumed her stepfather was working late. She returned the helmet and watched him drive away, still wanting a bike of her own someday. With adrenaline still pumping through her, Isabelle knew that she would get restless if she went inside. She decided to burn it off with a walk around her block instead.

Connor glanced towards the trees when he thought he heard some rustling. He looked at the tree in question as golden eyes peered back at him. It was slightly unnerving but he brushed it off as nothing more than a cat that had climbed up. Connor continued on his walk until the flapping of wings much larger than a birds caught his attention. He looked up just as a.. Harpy? Was that what had just flown overhead and landed in front of him? The male stepped back as the bird woman shrieked. How was this possible?! They were just myths!
