Has anyone here read the book 20000 miles underwater? It was my favorite book as a child and it still is.

charrington wrote:If you haven't read it already, definitely Pride and Prejudice! Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, and The Picture of Dorian Gray are also a nice books as well. ^^

Gonna add onto this because why not? (I'm basing this off the OP's preferences btw-)

- 1984 by George Orwell (pretty depressing throughout, ESPECIALLY the ending)
- Flowers for Algernon (same as 1984)
- Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (I mean there's SOME adventure, but it's mostly just a dark satire.)

I may edit this when I think of more books whoops-

Gregor the Overlander is good, but does get pretty grim. I'd reccomend it for maybe 12+ age group. If you like dragons, the How To Train Your Dragon series (not the movies) and Wings of Fire series are good. HTTYD is more childish but it has some good lessons regardless. Howl's Moving Castle is another short fantasy I enjoyed, and from what I know the movie represents it well. A Series of Unfortunate Events is being released on Netflix and is a stellar book series (the show is what all book movie/tv show adaptions aspire to be.)

''My side of the mountain'' by Jean Craighead George is really good, I've read it multiple times. It's about a boy leaving the city and living in the forest. It's also old.

I'd recommend Phillip K. Dick's work! He writes really thought-provoking philosophical sci-fi novels and short stories. There are also a few modern movies and TV shows based off of his works, such as Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Minority Report (The Minority Report), or Electric Dreams (Based off a bunch of his stories).

Some excellent books from Amazon's "100 Books to Read in a Lifetime:"

The Giver, 1984, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Power Broker (extremely interesting biography about Robert Moses, very well written and hard to put down - however, it may tire your hands, because it's heavy as hell and I haven't even finished it yet), The Road, Charlotte's Web (you've probably read this in school), Pride and Prejudice, The Book Thief, and Slaughterhouse Five.

So, yeah. There's the stretch goal... definitely just start with The Giver, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Book Thief, and 1984 later. All of these books are excellent and I would personally recommend them despite what you're normally interested in reading. Read their synopses, see what you're interested in. If you don't like something now, definitely come back to it later.

Sorry for the long list. Hope you enjoyed! These books are classics.

I'm pretty sure Tuck Everlasting is old. Not the Disney movie, the book. It's a really good book, one of my favorites.
