Critic? Movie buff? Cinephile?

You've come to the right thread.

    General Guidelines

    1. Express yourself! Don't just say whether you thought a movie was good or bad. Explain why you liked or disliked a film, or an aspect of a film.

    2. Don't spam. Try to avoid single sentence posts.

    3. Don't be a jerk. Keep in mind the difference between fact and opinion.

    4. Discussions are encouraged, arguments aren't.

Favorite movie(s), and why
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
Jaws
The Lion King

The fact that Italy made a whole genre of Western films (Spaghetti Western, this is a thing) is so weirdly fantastic to me. The music by Ennio Morricone is great. The Ecstasy of Gold is probably the best piece composed for any movie ever. Pretty much everything else is top notch, too. The cinematography, the pacing, the cast, etc. It's just good.

Least favorite movie(s), and why
Eragon was so inaccurate that the sequel can't be made. They should have given it a different title and marketed it as "loosely based on Eragon".

The Lion King (2019) was one of the biggest let downs of my life ngl. Rushed, awkward pace. Most of it was a soulless shot for shot remake of the original movie, and the only bits that offered anything new went by too soon to appreciate or take in.

Favorite Director(s)
Steven Spielberg, Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan

Favorite Actor(s)
None atm.

Any Film Critics you follow?
I used to follow Doug Walker (The Nostalgia Critic), not anymore..

Favorite movie, and why: Silence of the Lambs
Least favorite movie, and why: All Transformers movies(Micheal Bay ones). The robots have WAY too much detail it is hard to make out anything, especially when they are fighting. Also, those tiny robots that would NEVER last on Cybertron are just annoying. It focuses too much on the humans, even though the movie is about the robots. Just, lame.
Best movies ever seen: Silence of the Lambs. It had great actors, especially Anthony Hopkins. It was thrilling and kept me glued to the screen. Yellow Submarine. It was phycdelic and weird, but made it more entertaining. And it had good music. Help! It was funny and had my favorite band.
Worst movies ever seen:
Favorite Director: don't have one
Favorite Actor: Anthony Hopkins
Favorite Actress: none
Any Film Critics you follow?: don't know any

Favourite movie, and why: Fave movie, oh god help there are just so many. I think the only way to do this is mention my nostalgia movie and then try my current fave.
My favourite movie from my childhood is the beautifully animated Secret of Nimh, it has a great plot, great characters and gorgeous animation. I consider it a masterpiece of storytelling and animation, my only issue with it is it's over too soon.
Now my current favourite movie, I would say Casino Royale. I love Daniel Craig as Bond (I think he's the best one yet) and this Bond throws away all the cheesiness from the old Bond movies and replaces it with exciting action scenes and fantastic villain. It also has a well written woman who doesn't throw herself at Bond from the get go.

Least favourite movie, and why: Sadly there are too many bad movies, after a while they all just blur into one but I would have to say The Last Airbender. I love Avatar the cartoon series, I believe it is also a masterpiece of storytelling and animation and M Night Shamalyan (Sp? don't really care) destroyed any hopes we had for a live action version. Everything about it was bad, awful writing, irritating child characters that cannot act at all, terrible directing and the bending looked cool but it also looked impractical as it took forever for them to do anything. The reason the action worked in the cartoon was because it was quick and snappy, they didn't have to do a whole dance routine to lift one tiny rock.

Best movies ever seen: War Horse, Meet the Robinsons (Something from childhood but one of the only Disney animated films to have a good message), Rise of the Guardians, Inside Out, the Harry Potter series, the Lord of the Rings series, Scream
Worst movies ever seen: The Golden Compass, Eragon, The Percy Jackson series disaster, Twilight series, Divergent, Maze Runner, most films with Adam Sandler (Except for 50 first dates)
Favourite Director: Don't have one
Favourite Actor: Torn between Ewan Mcgregor, James McAvoy and Tom Hiddleston
Favourite Actress: I can't really decide one here.
Any Film Critics you follow?: Nostalgia Critic, Chris Stuckmann, Mike J
Trying to get back into roleplaying, haven't done it for a while. I like roleplaying wolves but they have to be realistic so no alpha beta delta and especially no healer ranks. I like big cats, horses, cats. I like roleplaying warrior cats. I don't play a lot with human characters unless they're shapeshifters or dragon riders.

So if you have a roleplay that needs more members send me a PM.

No way, I used to be totally, completely, and entirely obsessed with The Silence of the Lambs. Such a thrilling and perfectly executed movie. Have you read the book too? Often after reading the book of a film I think less of the film, but it does such a good job of doing the book justice. I really feel that it perfectly captured the atmosphere and the characters (especially Starling, I could never ever watch another actress play her and believe that it is Starling.)

The prequel, Red Dragon, also makes for a great book and film. Then there's also the TV show. I was so hesitant when I heard about it, but the guy who makes the show is actually a huge Silence of the Lambs fanboy and not just someone looking to make money. He's handling the show really really well, and Mads Mikkelsen plays a very different version of Hannibal Lecter, it's difficult to compare it to Anthony Hopkins' Lecter. I think that's a good thing, Anthony killed that version of Hannibal and nobody should every try to replicate it, because they'll only fail.

The only thing that saddens me about the Hannibal Lecter series in general is the existence of Hannibal and Hannibal Rising. Thomas Harris was basically forced to write those books because studio guys wanted to milk what they could from the franchise. They were such unnecessary and unbelievable additions to the Hannibal Lecter cannon, both those two books and movies should never have existed.

I will add Secret of Nimh to my to watch list (I have a physical list that has hundreds of films on it haha). Based on your "worst films" list, I'd like to ask what you thought of the Hunger Games series? You name a lot of Young Adult fiction films (and I'm with you on the one's you've listed... they're just so... average and generic and lame, for films). I actually enjoyed the Hunger Games. Namely the second and the last film. (And ugh Adam Sandler, I'd love to give him a good hard slap, just his face annoys me, let alone his acting and script writing).

Eeh I think Hunger Games is the least offensive of the Young Adult dystopian craze because it actually has an interesting concept. Not a fan of the first film I think the second is the best out of the series, the first mockingjay is bit dull and the last is quite cool, the effects are brilliant. I was shocked that they managed to get the lizard men things right

      Favorite movie, and why:
okay i adore two movies: The Outsiders and Rebel Without A Cause. The Outsiders is one of the only movies I have ever watched that actually follows the book, it's literally the same. It's amazing, well-written, and well played. The characters relate to the book, and is overall amazing. RWAC has James Dean in it and it makes me want to cry. It has such amazing acting in it, and the words and emotion put into the characters are brilliant.
      Least favorite movie, and why:
Gravity was a HUGE disappointment. It was unrealistic, the acting wasn't all that great and I don't know I just did not have a good enough vibe with it. I wasn't impressed with who they chose as the actors, and overall I rate it like a four out of ten.
      Best movies ever seen:
Class from 1983 is the funniest thing ever, but it's not the best. I'd go with Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Outsiders, Rebel Without A Cause, or Inside Out as a more modern film.
      Worst movies ever seen:
The Golden Compass was pretty rubbish, I hate twilight with a passion, and Gravity.
      Favorite Director:
I don't really have one, but I quite like Tim Burton's work.
      Favorite Actor:
      Rob Lowe or James Dean
      Favorite Actress:
      Audrey Hepburn without a doubt
      Any Film Critics you follow?:
      Nah not really

I've never watched The Outsiders or Rebel Without A Cause, I know that the latter is on my to watch list. I don't think I've ever seen a movie with James Dean. If he's anything like young Marlon Brando, I'll probably like him.

And yes, most people I know thought that Gravity was great. I won't deny that it had fantastic visual effects, but in my opinion, that is all that the movie has going for it. I guess a full length film of nothing but nice visual effects isn't my thing, I need to be invested in the plot or characters. I have yet to watch a film with George Clooney where he actually portrays a character with any depth, rather than just a mildly different version of himself. He's just always that cool guy that doesn't have to do anything but stand still with that smug half-smile to be a lady magnet (that act really doesn't work for me). I don't really have a problem with Sandra Bullock, probably because I love her in Miss Congeniality, but seeing her in space was a bit odd. I guess my biggest problem was that the plot was so incredibly predictable. It's a typical Hollywood film, the protagonist is going to survive in the end, but not before every possible thing that could go wrong goes wrong. Snore. Interstellar handled Murphey's law a lot better, haha.

Yes the lizard men or whatever they were supposed to be called. That actually scared me a little, and I don't get that often. Those long moments of silence when they're underground, and you know something bad is about to happen, but you don't know what or when (ok I knew what because I'd read the books). I thought that was done very well, maybe a little formulaic, but just not too formulaic for it to be predictable.

Favorite movie, and why: This question is literally tearing me apart right now. I'd have to go with Saving Private Ryan or Casablanca.

Least favorite movie, and why: Where the Wild Things Are, just because it's all I can think of right now.

Best movies ever seen: Lots of the ones mentioned already, but I'll add Alien and a lot of Steven Spielberg.

Worst movies ever seen: Where The Wild Things Are just because it really sucked.

Favorite Director: Steven Spielberg, with Stanley Kubrick as a close second.

Favorite Actor: polerberr, I feel like such a copy cat, but Tom Hanks. And Humphrey Bogart.

Favorite Actress:
SIGOURNEY WEAVER

Any Film Critics you follow?: No, but this is the career that I really, really, really, want to pursue.

Films are literally my life. I love them so much. Sorry if my sentences seem choppy and unorganized, but I'm having a moment here at my computer. I saw this thread and I'm so excited. OMGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But now on a serious note, I would love love love love love LUV to discuss classic films with anyone. Sci-fi is my preferred genre, but I love Westerns, War Dramas, a little bit of Horror (more like Silence of the Lambs-paced than Exorcist-ish), and other types like that. I'm not that big into comedies or sports films. I'll be sure to check this thread again. Thanks for making it!
