^ Duolingo is nice for learning hiragana and a few kanji early on, but I would never suggest it as a primary learning tool, it's more a supporting tool.
For me, I am using the Japanese from Zero books by George Trombley. He accompanies them with free YouTube videos so even if you don't have the books, the videos are worth watching. I also use the app Kanji Study to practice writing kana.
I know there are other textbooks out there like Genki and Minna no nihongo, but I think they are more for classroom learning and I'm not sure I want to drop my work hours to pursue formal education like a diploma.
